Celebrating Water

This week marked World Water Day (3/22), a global moment to pause and appreciate one of the most essential elements of life: water. While it flows so easily into our daily routines, it’s easy to forget just how extraordinary and vital it truly is.

Water connects every part of our world. It nourishes our bodies, grows our food, powers our communities, and shapes the landscapes we love. In fact, about 60% of the human body is made up of water, and every system, from our brain to our muscles, relies on it to function properly. Simply put, water is life.

Across the planet, water tells an incredible story. Roughly 71% of Earth’s surface is covered in water, yet only about 2.5% of that is fresh, and even less is easily accessible for drinking. Even so, communities around the world continue to find innovative ways to conserve, protect, and share this precious resource.

Here are a few simple facts that highlight just how remarkable water is:

• Less than 1% of the world’s freshwater is readily accessible for human use, with most locked in glaciers, ice caps, or deep underground

• The water you drink today may be billions of years old, and it has been continuously recycled

• Agriculture accounts for about 70% of global freshwater use, making it the largest consumer of water worldwide

• Producing everyday items requires significant “hidden” water. Example: it can take over 1,800 gallons of water to produce a single pair of jeans

• Oceans produce more than half of the world’s oxygen, thanks to tiny organisms like phytoplankton

While World Water Day has passed, its message continues. It is a chance to recognize the progress being made around the world, from improved access to clean drinking water to growing efforts in sustainability and conservation.

Even small actions can make a meaningful difference. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, fixing leaks, choosing water-efficient products, or simply being more mindful of usage can all add up. These everyday choices help contribute to future generations' access to clean, safe water.

As we move forward, carrying the spirit of World Water Day with us can be as simple as appreciating the role water plays in our everyday lives. It is also an opportunity to recognize the vital work happening across the water industry, where professionals continue to innovate, build, and maintain the systems that make safe, reliable water access possible for communities everywhere.
