We all go through difficult times, whether professionally or personally. There’s nothing better than knowing that when life gets hard, you have a team that has your back.
Lately, this has been on my mind a lot. After going through one of the most difficult personal experiences of my life, I've been reminded that the people around us can make all the difference. This article comes straight from the heart and from what I've experienced firsthand.
Think about any championship team. The stars may score the points, but championships are won because the entire team steps up when someone can't. The bench isn't there just to fill a roster, it's there to make sure the team keeps moving forward.
The workplace should be no different.
We often talk about what makes a company a great place to work. Is it the salary? The benefits? The flexibility? The opportunities for growth?
Yes, all of those things are important. A great salary is great, but a team that has your back has no price.
It is easy to be a team when everything is going well. It is during the difficult moments that you truly understand the culture of the company you work for and the people you work with.
Sometimes life happens.
A family emergency.
A loss.
A personal struggle.
A professional setback.
Moments when work simply cannot be your number-one priority.
And in those moments, having colleagues and leaders who say, "We've got you. Take care of what you need to take care of," means more than any benefit listed in a job description.
It is the coworker who checks in without asking for anything.
The person who quietly picks up a project because they know you can't.
The manager who gives you the space to breathe.
The team that keeps the game moving while reminding you that your spot will still be there when you're ready to return.
That is culture.
We spend so much of our lives at work that the people around us matter. Feeling supported, respected, and genuinely cared about creates a kind of loyalty and engagement that you cannot manufacture with a company slogan.
Personally, the last few weeks have reinforced something I will never forget: people may not always remember the deadlines you met or the numbers you achieved, but they will remember how you made them feel during their hardest moments. Support, empathy, and grace leave a lasting impact.
Having a team that celebrates your wins, steps in when you're struggling, and never makes you feel like you're facing life's challenges alone?
That has no price.
The best teams don't just celebrate the people who score the goals. They celebrate the teammates who step in, cover for one another, and make sure no one has to carry the weight alone.
That's what a real team does.
In sports, no one wins a championship alone.
At work, the same is true.
If you're fortunate enough to be part of a team like that, appreciate it.

Be the teammate who comes off the bench when someone else needs you.
