The Power of Being Yourself
There’s something almost ironic about marketing.
We spend so much time looking at what other brands are doing that, sometimes, we start trying to become them.
A campaign performs well, so we recreate it. A certain type of content gets attention, so we follow the same formula. Someone has built a successful brand, and suddenly we’re wondering if we should sound like them too.
It makes sense. Looking at what works is part of learning.
But there’s a difference between being inspired by someone and trying to become them.
What Makes You Different Is Usually Already There
A strategy that works beautifully for one brand might feel completely unnatural for another.
The same is true for people.
You can learn from someone’s career, communication style, or way of working without deciding that you need to follow the same path.
Maybe you’re not the loudest person in the room. Maybe networking doesn’t come naturally to you. Maybe your strength is noticing details, asking thoughtful questions, solving problems quietly, or making people feel understood.
Those things can be easy to overlook when you’re comparing yourself to someone whose strengths are more visible.
But they still matter.
In marketing, authenticity isn’t something you can manufacture by simply deciding to “be authentic.” It comes from knowing what you care about, what you’re good at, and what perspective you have that someone else doesn’t.
Your career works the same way.
Take the Lesson, Leave the Formula
There will always be someone doing something better than you.
Someone with more experience. Someone more confident. Someone further along.
There’s nothing wrong with looking at them and thinking, I want to learn from that.
But maybe the question isn’t, How do I become more like them?
Maybe it’s:
What can I learn from them without losing what makes me, me?
Because the things that take you further aren’t always the things you borrowed from someone else.
Sometimes, they’re the things you already had.
You just needed to trust them a little more.
